Northland Business Axed as Foreign Corporate Giant Gets Privileged Deal From National

Minister for Economic Development Steven Joyce showed total contempt for Kiwi businesses in Parliament today, says New Zealand First.

“When alerted that a Northland business has been dumped from government contracts in favour of a foreign-owned corporate in the waste industry, Mr Joyce showed not an ounce of concern,” says New Zealand First Leader and Member of Parliament for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“Mr Joyce just did not want to know. But the facts are that Northland Waste, an employer of 200 people, has been axed from its contract with Corrections and KiwiRail. It has been told the government has moved to a centralised system with IRD as the lead agency.

“Northland Waste is always keen to tender against competitors, but this contract did not even go to tender, locals were given no opportunity to compete, the Corrections contract simply went to foreign-owned Waste Management which did not have to face any competition.

“This is not a fair, free market, but appears to be government procurement by decree from the IRD and will be hitting businesses all over the country.

“Mr Joyce claims the government supports regional growth, but how can regional businesses survive under a government favouring a foreign-owned giant?” says Mr Peters.
