Minister congratulates talented youth of Porirua
National MP Hekia Parata has congratulated the winners of the 2015 Porirua Youth Awards at a ceremony held at Pātaka Museum last night.
“The depth of talent, commitment and achievement among the youth of Porirua was exemplified by the fourteen winners last night,” says Ms Parata.
The Porirua Youth Awards were founded by Ms Parata in 2010 to recognise and encourage youth of Porirua aged between 12 and 19 years old who excel in art and culture, education, environment and community work, and sport.
“The awards are now in their fifth year and the calibre of entries is higher than ever. One of this year’s youngest winners, Kelsea Elkington, has broken a number of Olympic age-group records in her chosen sport of weightlifting,” says Ms Parata.
There were four excellence award winners who each received a $1250 prize to help them towards their goals.
“I’d like to thank Whittakers and Derek Wootton Memorial Trust for generously sponsoring and recognising the value of these awards.
“Each of this year’s winners is a great example of what young people can achieve with hard work. Congratulations to them all.”
