Māori Party secures more support for Māori housing
Supporting whānau Māori to improve their housing conditions, is a key aim of the $35.3 million the Māori Party has secured.
“The housing issues facing our people from homelessness to home ownership are numerous ,so we’re excited to have secured funding to support them move forward in that journey,” said Māori Party Co-leader Marama Fox.
“Some of our people want to build new homes on Māori owned land, others want to move out of a social housing provider and shift to a private rental.
The funding will give practical assistance to whānau and Māori housing groups in the community through the establishment of a Māori Housing Network. It will also result in the development of community solutions to housing; and further improve infrastructure support for Māori housing initiatives.
“Our whānau and Māori groups need practical and expert assistance so we’re pleased to have doubled the existing funding for Māori housing.
The fund will help realise the goals of the Māori Housing Strategy – He Whare Āhuru He Oranga Tāngata that was launched by the founding Māori Party Co-leader Dame Hon Tariana Turia last year.
“This Māori Housing Network extends the vision to capture the breadth of issues facing our whānau in housing,” says Mrs Fox.
The annual amount for Māori housing is increasing from $7 million to $15.8 million.
