Māori Party secures essential funding for Whānau Ora

Māori Party secures essential funding for Whānau Ora

The Māori Party co-leaders are proud to announce a 29% increase to the current level of funding for Whānau Ora outcomes. “Whānau remain at the core of Māori Party decision making and Budget 2015 reflects this” says Hon Te Ururoa Flavell.

“Our commitment is to strengthen the vehicle that Whānau Ora offers through maintaining the current volume of workers that work alongside whānau to realise their aspirations.

“This announcement confirms our determination to build on and accelerate the momentum of Whānau Ora. We have considered the challenges of the past few weeks and we are even further determined to get as much support directly to whānau so they can achieve their goals.

“Today we continue the legacy of our founding co-leaders Dame Hon Tariana Turia and Dr Pita Sharples to create system change in the way we go about supporting whanau to realise their aspirations,” says Hon Te Ururoa Flavell.

Mr Flavell is proud to pick up the mantle and indeed the challenge laid down by our people to deliver support to whānau supported by navigators, kaitoko whānau and oranga whanau workers who have a proven track record in effectively supporting whānau to navigate an often complicated bureaucracy.

“Today is also about acknowledging that whānau are no longer being done to by the state – this approach empowers whānau to take back control of their own lives, and to realise independence through the support of navigators” says Marama Fox.

Today’s announcement of $49.8 million over four years for Whānau Ora navigators will enable ongoing support for whānau to achieve their goals.
