New Zealand Parliament hosts Speaker of Fijian Parliament

23 March 2015

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Rt Hon David Carter, will host his Fijian counterpart, the Hon Dr Jiko Fatefehi Luveni this week when she visits New Zealand.

Dr Luveni, who became Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament on 6 October 2014, is the first woman to be appointed to that role. She had previously served as Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon David Carter said “this visit is very important and I look forward to hosting Dr Luveni this week. Fiji needs our continued assistance and support to make its return to parliamentary democracy a successful one and the New Zealand parliament is doing whatever it can to assist” he said.

At Parliament she will meet with the Speaker and other presiding officers, the Leader of the House and Shadow Leader, be introduced to the House and observe Question time. She will also meet with the Social Services and Foreign Affairs committees, members of the NZ-Pacific Parliamentary Friendship Group and undertake a visit to a local electorate office.

Dr Luveni has a strong interest in learning more about how to bring parliament closer to the people of Fiji and will also meet with officials responsible for parliamentary television and the parliamentary education services, where she will observe a school visit to Parliament.

Dr Luveni will be accompanied by the Assistant Minister of Health and three members of Parliament. The visit will take place from 24 to 26 March.
