PM Confused in Sending Troops Under Anzac Banner And Refusing a Vote He Would Lose

The Prime Minister is confused in sending troops to Iraq under the revered ANZAC banner while he bypasses a democratic debate and a vote in Parliament, says New Zealand First.

“Mr Key is refusing a parliamentary vote because he knows he would lose it,” says New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters. “In short, the government’s view is a minority one. Therefore insisting upon an executive decision is anti-democratic and a disgrace.

“Governments don’t go to war, companies do, and that is why there should be both a debate and a vote.

“Mr Key and his Australian colleague Tony Abbott have cobbled up some propaganda, tugging on New Zealanders' emotions to sell their poor decision making on troops to Iraq.

“This is shameful, especially in a year commemorating the World War I centenary, where the ANZAC spirit and culture had its roots.

“The use of the ANZAC umbrella does not fit Mr Key’s argument that the troops are only going to train the Iraqi army and are not combat troops,” says Mr Peters.
