Inquiry into the 2014 general election

Media release – Justice and Electoral Committee

Inquiry into the 2014 general election

Parliament’s Justice and Electoral Select Committee is conducting an inquiry into the 2014 general election.

Committee chairperson, Jacqui Dean, encourages people or organisations who may have encountered issues with the operation of the election to make submissions to the inquiry. “It is an important convention that following a general election this committee examines the legal and administrative aspects of the election. This process allows a multi-party approach to any review and reform of the current law and administration of Parliamentary elections, and allows for the public to have their say”.

The terms of reference that the committee has for the enquiry are “To examine the law and administrative procedures for the conduct of Parliamentary elections in light of the 2014 general election”

“We have deliberately kept the committee’s terms of reference broad to ensure that any New Zealanders who may have encountered issues with any aspect of our current electoral law and administrative practices feel that they can bring these to our attention,” Jacqui Dean added.

The committee is calling for public submissions with a closing date of Tuesday 31 March 2015.

Submissions should be forwarded by the due date, either online using our website (www.parliament.nz) or in writing to the address below. If a submitter wishes to appear before the committee, they need to state this clearly and provide a name, daytime phone number and email address. Submissions generally become public and are published on our website. For further guidance on making a submission, read our publication Making a submission to a Parliamentary Select Committee on our website or contact us at
04 817 9520.

Address for correspondence: Justice and Electoral Committee, Parliament Buildings, WELLINGTON 6160.
