Local Government Reform Key to Wellington’s Future

UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu MP Peter Dunne says Wellington has been over-governed for too long, and change is needed to best shape the region’s future.

Speaking after the release of the Local Government Commission’s proposed plan for Wellington, Mr Dunne says retaining the status quo was not an option.

“The current structure is too disjointed and parochial to be effective in the region’s interests.

“Too much time is currently spent arguing the toss between the various local authorities, rather than getting on with the job of promoting the economic and social development of the region.

“That has to stop, otherwise Prime Minister John Key’s infamous comment that Wellington was ‘dying’ will come to pass.

“With a population of not much over 400,000, 6 territorial authorities (excluding Wairarapa) and two District Health Boards, Wellington is massively over-governed, and it is time for change,” he says.

Mr Dunne says the proposed Greater Wellington Council, supported by a network of community boards is a “sensible approach, although the Wairarapa should be excluded as “a separate case”.

“Wellington’s choice is stark – like the dinosaurs – adapt or die.

“This proposal gives the region a chance, and therefore deserves consideration,” he says.
