Exploitation of Worker Brings Shame on NZ
The Employment Court ruling in favour of an exploited migrant chef in Christchurch is just the tip of the iceberg, says New Zealand First’s Ethnic Affairs Spokesperson Mahesh Bindra.
“I am appalled to hear that on top of last week’s news that Christchurch hire and construction companies have breached employment laws, we also have issues with migrant workers in hospitality,” says Mr Bindra.
“It breaks my heart to hear of the exploitation of those who have come to Aotearoa.
“New Zealand has an international reputation for offering immigrants and refugees the opportunity to build a better future for their families and even if some workers are only here on short-term visas we must also look after them.
“The Government needs to take swift action to protect our reputation and the immigrants it has welcomed with open arms, before we become the shame of the South Pacific.
“To treat our ethnic brothers and sisters with such disdain is appalling,” says Mr Bindra.
