Nurses Leaving in Droves Yet Shortage Predicted

Nurses Leaving in Droves Yet Shortage Predicted

The new Minister of Health must act immediately to stem the tide of nurses forced out of the country, says New Zealand First.

“With a shortage of nurses likely in within two years the government has to make sure Kiwi graduates are recruited, says New Zealand First Health Spokesperson Barbara Stewart.

“Many nursing graduates cannot get jobs and move overseas, often to work in different occupations. What a waste of training and a loss of skills.

“Indeed, it is a ludicrous situation when Health Workforce NZ predicts there will not be enough nurses by 2017.

“New Zealand nursing graduates are not being hired because District Health Boards favour overseas nurses with some experience.

“This reluctance to hire recent Kiwi graduates is not on and needs a rethink, especially when it is obvious we need to build up our workforce.

“We must rate our graduates highly – Kiwi nurses are the best fit.

“DHBs have an obligation to provide the experience that new graduates need, their supervision can be factored in to overall workplace training and development.

“This warning of a critical shortage is not new and cannot be ignored if New Zealanders are to retain confidence in our health system.”
