National backing women to succeed

Under the National-led Government real improvements have been made for New Zealand women, and we are keen to continue building on those achievements says Women’s Affairs Spokesperson, Jo Goodhew.

“National is increasing the participation of women in the New Zealand economy, investing in key areas such as education, health and justice, and ensuring women are engaged in their communities and succeeding in whatever they do,” says Mrs Goodhew.

Under National the gender pay gap has continued to narrow, reducing from 12 per cent in 2008 to 10.1 per cent. New Zealand is ranked 7th out of 136 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Index – compared to Australia at 24th.

“Promoting the role of women in senior leadership positions and in governance roles is a key part of our agenda,” she says.

“Research shows diversity in senior roles has a positive outcome for businesses, and when businesses thrive the country does. We will continue to work with business to address the career barriers facing New Zealand women.

“To further help towards with the cost of raising a family, National will boost parental tax credits and extend paid parental leave by four weeks.

“Crime is at a 35 year low, but we need to keep working to change attitudes towards violence to ensure women, and all New Zealanders, are safe in their homes and communities. National has a cross-government plan which aims to address the issue of violence, better support victims and work to reduce re-offending.

“National recognises the diverse role women play within the workforce, families and communities. We want to support women to reach their potential in all of these areas,” says Mrs Goodhew.
