Rapid Transit to unclog Christchurch
Labour will build a 21st century Rapid Transit system for Christchurch, says Labour Leader David Cunliffe.
“The long delayed recovery of Christchurch hinges on a modern commuter system for the city.
“We will invest $100 million in a modern rail plan that will unclog Christchurch’s roads.
“Labour wants to see a commuter rail system that will connect Rangiora and Rolleston. We will work with local councils
to invest in this link.
“It is imperative that we act rapidly as the earthquakes have changed the face of the city and created huge congestion,
especially in the north.
“Commuter rail remains the most cost-effective way to reduce congestion. We will use the existing tracks and stations
with a few upgrades.
“This will be an investment in a public transport network that will serve Christchurch for the coming century. This
money will come out of currently unallocated funds within the National Land Transport Fund. It will not mean cutting any
other planned projects.
“Commuter rail will open up Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Rolleston for residential and commercial development. The urban
stations will also stimulate urban renewal in places like Hornby and Papanui.
“Labour’s plan will mean that Christchurch will have a modern, 21st century transport system for a modern, vibrant
city.”
