A new deal for the conservation estate
The health of our economy depends on New Zealand preserving and restoring our land, air, water and indigenous wildlife,
says Labour’s Conservation spokesperson Ruth Dyson.
Announcing Labours Conservation policy, she said that there will be a comprehensive plan to restore our responsibility
for New Zealand’s conservation estate.
“As part of our Conservation plan we will move to promote ‘mainland islands’ with a view to eradication or intensive
control of predators, as technology and techniques allow.
“We will also undertake a systematic classification of stewardship land, beginning with land that has clearly got
significant conservation value.
“Labour will establish a network of marine reserves and other protected areas to look after our marine biodiversity,
with 30% of our marine zone to be under protection by 2020.
“We will also keep the critically threatened Maui’s dolphin safe from being harmed by activities such as fishing or
petroleum exploration,” says Ruth Dyson.
“We reject the trade-offs that National has made in conservation because we believe that conservation and the economy
are simply two sides of the same coin.”
