UnitedFuture Supports NZUSA First in Family Initiative
UnitedFuture Leader Hon Peter Dunne
supports a new initiative to assist ‘first in family’
students to attend university.
“UnitedFuture works hard to create a better New Zealand for future generations. This policy is an important component of that.
“University can be daunting and requires a lot from our young people.
“Any assistance we can offer to those who don’t have a parent, sibling or other relative to help guide prospective students through the myriad of processes is welcome” said Mr Dunne.
The First in Family Scholarship was developed and fully costed by the New Zealand Union of Students’ Associations.
It offers a full fees and living costs scholarship to those who will be the first in their family to attend university.
Additionally, the programme requires participating universities to extend support to secondary schools to select and encourage prospective First in Family applicants and support them to succeed once they are at the tertiary institution.
“I appreciate the work the New Zealand Union of Students’ Associations has undertaken in developing this policy.
“We will add this policy to the mix of policies we will discuss with parties following the General Election.
“UnitedFuture remains committed to our Zero Fees policy for all tertiary study in place of the Student Allowance scheme and the First in Family policy complements that well.”
