UnitedFuture to Fundamentally Change Paid Parental Leave
UnitedFuture Leader Hon Peter Dunne will announce the party’s new approach to paid parental leave in Auckland this
morning.
“It is time our paid-parental leave policy stepped out of the 1950s and into the 2000s.
“The current policy only allows stay at home mothers to take paid parental leave and not fathers.
“Our proposal is to allow parents to share the entitlement to paid parental leave” said Mr Dunne.
The policy is currently being introduced in the United Kingdom by the Liberal Democrat party in coalition with the
Conservative party.
It allows parents to structure paid parental leave in the way that suits them up to a maximum of 13 months paid leave in
totality.
“Modern parents are sharing the role of raising children in ways we never used to see.
“We believe that investing in parents, on whom children rely for their well-being, is key.
“We need to give parents choice and flexibility.
“With shared parental leave, Flexisuper, Income Splitting, and flexible working hours, UnitedFuture is putting choices
back in the hands of families, where those choices belong.
“Other political parties think they know best for individual families.
“But we know parents know best and that’s why we give them choice.” said Mr Dunne.
