Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security publishes new reports on inquiries into NZSIS and GCSB

The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS), Cheryl Gwyn, published two reports today relating to
inquiries into the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) and the Government Communications Security Bureau
(GCSB). Under the revamped Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act 1996, reports resulting from IGIS
inquiries are required to be published on the IGIS website.
The first report relates to a complaint by an individual into the actions of the NZSIS during the execution of a search
warrant. The second report arose from an inquiry by the IGIS into reporting errors in the 2012/2013 Annual Report of the
GCSB. These are the first reports to be published under the enhanced oversight legislation.
Both inquiries were conducted by the former IGIS, Hon Andrew McGechan QC.
“The publication of inquiries by my office is an important part of the IGIS role. It will help give the public
confidence that there is robust and effective oversight of New Zealand’s intelligence and security agencies,” said Ms
Gwyn.

The IGIS will not be making any further comments on the release of these two reports. Reports from future inquiries will
also be made available on the website.
