Not curtains for public broadcasting under a Labour Government
New Zealanders will enjoy the benefits of solid public broadcasting under a Labour Government, Labour's Broadcasting spokesperson Kris Faafoi says.
“The budget has once again highlighted National’s complete lack of nous when it comes to forward thinking around broadcasting.
"In this case it's no news is bad news. With technology fast transforming the media, the Government has shown no sign whatsoever of helping public broadcasting move with the times.
"While Radio New Zealand’s new Chief Executive recently set out a new vision for RNZ, Broadcasting Minister Craig Foss has been missing in action.
"How we watch and listen is fast changing and our public broadcasters need to stay in step with the rest of industry to remain relevant.
The Budget stuck with National's business as usual approach.
“That won't cut it.
"Ensuring a strong public broadcaster into the future will guarantee information, entertainment and education will get to every New Zealander.
“Kiwis won't have to pay a monthly subscription to watch quality local and international content under Labour.
"Public broadcasting sparks debates and showcases Kiwi talent without the pressure of commercial imperatives.
“Labour will support that and make sure no-one is left out when it comes to what we watch and listen to.”
