Republic of the Union of Myanmar Speaker of Upper House visits Parliament
16 May 2014
The Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw (House of Nationalities) His Excellency U Khin Aung Myint is visiting New Zealand as a guest of the New Zealand Parliament from this weekend.
The Speaker, who is travelling with a delegation of members of the Amyotha Hluttaw and officials, is looking to learn as much as he can about New Zealand’s parliamentary system including the Parliamentary Service and Library.
Speaker Myint has an interest in New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements, central and local government responsibilities and Māori/Government engagement in relation to social and economic development.
While in Wellington, Speaker Myint will hold talks with the New Zealand’s Speaker, meet with three Select Committees and observe Question Time in the House.
Speaker Rt Hon David Carter is pleased to host this visit.
“Visits of this kind serve to strengthen ties between parliaments and to enable better knowledge and understanding around parliamentary practices and the institution of Parliament. It is also about sharing knowledge and supporting one another. I was pleased to have the opportunity to lead a parliamentary delegation to Myanmar last October following on from an earlier visit in 2013 by the Speaker of Lower House (Pyithu Hluttaw) and I look forward to welcoming Speaker Myint to our Parliament.”
The visit of the Speaker runs from 17 – 23 May. While in New Zealand Speaker Myint will visit Auckland, Taupo and Wellington.
