New Zealand Sign Language week at Parliament

Parliament is working to mark New Zealand Sign Language week and enhance its engagement with the Deaf community. Users of NZSL are encouraged to take advantage of increased access to Parliament through the following activities.

Interpretation of question time

At 2 p.m. on Tuesday 13 May and Wednesday 14 May an interpretation of question time will be provided in sign language. There are two ways that this can be viewed:

• Parliament TV viewers will be able to see the interpretation as an inset in the corner of the screen (replays available at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and on-demand from the archive).

• Anyone is welcome to attend question time. Visitors to Parliament’s public galleries will be able to see the sign language interpreters on screens in the debating chamber.

Tours of Parliament

Throughout May tours of Parliament will be offered with a sign language interpreter. This is an opportunity to learn about New Zealand’s democratic processes, see what happens when the House sits, and enjoy the buildings.

Tours with a sign language interpreter will take place on the following dates:

• Tuesday 13 May, 12.15 p.m. to 1.45 p.m. (can be combined with a visit to the public gallery)

• Wednesday 14 May, 12.15 p.m. to 1.45 p.m. (can be combined with a visit to the public gallery)

• Saturday 17 May, 9.45 a.m. to 11 a.m.

• Wednesday 21 May, 9.45 a.m. to 11 a.m.

• Saturday 24 May, 9.45 a.m. to 11 a.m.

• Wednesday 28 May, 9.45 a.m. to 11 a.m.

• Saturday 31 May, 9.45 a.m. to 11 a.m.
