Dunne on Ruataniwha Decision
Dunne on Ruataniwha Decision
UnitedFuture Leader
Peter Dunne says today’s draft decision on the Ruataniwha
Dam is a partial win for all New Zealanders and the
environment we hold so dear.
The draft decision released today approves the dam, but with rigorous parameters; both nitrogen and phosphorous must be managed in contrast to the single nutrient approach favoured by the dam’s backers.
“This raises the bar considerably on the environmental standards the dam will have to reach, and reinforces the High Court decision last year on the Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council’s One-Plan. To that extent it is a fundamental victory in favour of environmental protection.
“Now the dam’s promoters will have to decide if the project is economically viable, given the environmental standards now required to be met.
“This decision shows the worth of the Resource Management Act as it stands, and why any weakening of its principles would be a disaster.
“New Zealand’s environment is precious and the high bar that has been set today is very encouraging for anglers, Iwi, and all those who enjoy and spend time in our outdoors.”
“It is time for us to start an honest and sincere, national conversation about how we balance our important agricultural industry and our equally important ‘great outdoors” said Mr Dunne.
