UnitedFuture welcomes CANGO Manifesto

UnitedFuture Leader Peter Dunne has welcomed the CANGO cancer manifesto launched last evening in Wellington.

CANGO, an alliance of eight major Cancer NGOs, has published a policy prescription that identifies seven key areas which if acted upon by government can make a profound impact on reducing the risk, early detection, effective treatment of, and palliative care regarding, cancer in New Zealand.

“In many ways this manifesto provides a blueprint of practical and effective measures any government can implement over and above existing level of funding and range of services currently provided through our public health system”, said Mr Dunne when speaking at the manifesto’s launch.

“While the gathering acknowledged successive governments had made good progress in addressing this most pervasive and deadliest of diseases in New Zealand, there is always room for more improvement in this area.

“The CANGO manifesto provides a pathway ahead on which to make further progress in dealing with this disease as it delivers a timely, practical, and deliverable strategy for tackling cancer - not just a vague statement of good intent. Importantly it reinforces the message about how manageable some cancers are, rather than the view that if nothing can be done, nothing will be done’”.

“CANGO is to be congratulated on its timely intervention on this crucial health issue”, said Mr Dunne.
