Horan calls for more urgent action for better cycle safety
Independent MP Brendan Horan is calling for urgent action to improve cycle safety on New Zealand roads.
“Today’s announcement of the members of the Cycle Safety Panel is a step in the right direction. These ten people
including Sarah Ulmer have a big job ahead of them, and I wish them godspeed in their work as lives are at stake.
“Too many cyclists are being killed or seriously injured.
“Last November I met Michael Woodhouse and discussed some of the very real problems with the Government’s administration
of road safety. I expressed many concerns including diversion of road user safety education funding, and safety issues
for children with the impending removal of school buses in more areas including Tauranga. In particularly there are
extreme road safety issues for school children in Welcome Bay.
“Today’s announcement talks about delivery of recommendations in September.
“I commend the formation of this group but the solutions are known. What is now needed is for the panel appointed today
to get stuck in, to have the power to begin implementing solutions immediately, and to be funded appropriately. They can
responsibility for the safety of our school children, young people and existing cyclists.
