Government fails meat inspection
The Government needs to stop allowing large meat processors to undertake their own meat safety inspections, the Green Party said today.
A Metro magazine article has highlighted widespread problems with safety inspections of meat in New Zealand freezing works. Concerns have been raised following the transfer of some meat inspections responsibilities to the meat processors themselves. Metro highlights examples of faecal and other contamination being missed by these company inspectors.
“We need to protect our 100% pure brand,” said Green Party agriculture spokesperson Steffan Browning.
“This is another example of deregulation letting New Zealanders down.
“We need independent safety inspection of our meat, our reputation depends on it,” said Mr Browning.
