Prime Minister Must Come Clean on Illegal SIS Raid
Rt Hon Winston Peters has called on the Prime Minister and the Security Intelligence Service to explain to Parliament
why they helped Fiji’s military dictator target a pro-Fiji democracy group in Auckland.
Mr Peters raised the issue again in Parliament today, pointing out that the Security Intelligence Service failed to
produce a search warrant when it raided an Auckland address in July last year.
“The Fiji military regime claimed there had been an assassination attempt and on this pretext an SIS raid was authorised
on a Democracy and Freedom movement.
“The SIS refused to produce a lawful search warrant, claiming it was classified, which raises the question of whether a
warrant had actually been issued.”
Mr Peters says the use of the Terrorism Prevention Act was also unlawful and it was probably dredged up because a normal
police warrant would never have got past the desk of a vigilant police officer or a judge.
“It’s time for John Key and Murray McCully to front up to Parliament and explain a devious and unlawful operation on New
Zealand soil.
“The fact that the Government ran away when taken to court over an associated issue shows that they have a lot to hide,”
says Mr Peters.
