Govt must commit to Pike River recovery operation
The Government’s approval of a staged re-entry into Pike River mine is long-awaited welcome news for the victims’ families, Labour’s MP for West Coast-Tasman Damien O’Connor says.
“The families have been tormented by the knowledge a recovery mission was possible but for so long there was a failure to make a decision.
“Everyone understandably wants a safe re-entry operation and I trust the skills and expertise of those involved in Mines Rescue will not be overridden by political or financial considerations.
“I will continue to work with the families in any way possible to ensure we get the best possible outcome from this very difficult process.
“Prime Minister John Key’s assurance that money has never been the issue has been comfort for the families and now it is time for the Government to commit to this operation,” Damien O’Connor says.
