Lower North Island Going Digital update
Broadcasting Minister Craig Foss is urging residents in the lower North Island to make sure they are ready for the
upcoming switch to digital television.
The lower North Island including Taranaki, most of Ruapehu District and the East Cape will go digital on 29 September
2013.
The remainder of the North Island, including Auckland will go digital two months later on 1 December 2013.
“Latest research shows that 94 per cent of households nationwide have already made the switch to digital television
which is a good start.
“However it is important ensure groups with the highest level of need have an opportunity to apply for the government’s
Targeted Assistance Package,” says Mr Foss.
The assistance package is available to people who meet the following criteria and do not already have digital TV:
75 years and older with a Community Services Card;
receiving a Supported Living Payment due to a health condition or disability that impacts ability to work (previously
the Invalid’s Benefit)
receiving a Veteran's Pension; or
former recipients of the Invalid's Benefit or Veteran's Pension who converted to New Zealand Superannuation at age 65
or over.
“If you or someone you know meets one of these criteria and does not yet have digital television, they may be eligible
for help with equipment, installation and support.
“I encourage anyone in the lower North Island who thinks they may be eligible to call the Going Digital team on 0800 838
800 as soon as possible,” says Mr Foss.
The South Island made the switch to digital television earlier this year.
