Parliament Sport comes to Christchurch

Parliamentary Sports Media Release
16 August 2013

Parliament Sport comes to Christchurch

The Parliament Rugby and Netball Teams swap the Beehive for the sporting field tomorrow as they arrive in Christchurch to take on local selections and support the New Zealand Spinal Trust.

Local MPs Lianne Dalziel and Nicky Wagner are hosting the Parliamentary sports teams in the city for a day of stiff sporting competition but the New Zealand Spinal Trust is set to benefit most, says co-captains Damien O’Connor and Cam Calder.

“Parliamentary sport is a great way to get MPs into towns and regions outside of their electorate, engage with local communities and of course, support local charities,” says O’Connor.

“We are looking forward to taking on the Shirley rugby club, but know of Canterbury’s prowess on the sporting field so expect tough opposition in both the rugby and netball,” says Calder.

The games will be followed by an aftermatch charity function for the New Zealand Spinal Trust at the Shirley Rugby club with entertainment provided by the Court Jesters and many great items up for grabs.

The Parliament rugby team features a mix of MPs and Parliament staff. MPs Damien O’Connor, Cam Calder, Alfred Ngaro, Te Ururoa Flavell, Mark Mitchell and Paul Goldsmith will be on the rugby side while former All Black player and manager Richie Guy will call the shots as coach. The side will also be bolstered by former Black Cap Murphy Su’a who will slot into the loose forwards.
