End the double talk Nathan Guy

End the double talk Nathan Guy

Fisheries Minister Nathan Guy must listen to Labour and the recreational fishing community and take unfair snapper cuts for Kiwi fishermen off the table, Labour fisheries spokesperson David Cunliffe said today.

“Nathan Guy is hiding behind weasel words. The intent of his discussion document is crystal clear: slash the recreational snapper catch by up to two-thirds.

“Recreational fishers are rightly outraged. New Zealanders are passionate about their right to go fishing to feed their families and friends.

“Nathan Guy is a minister under fire and looking for a way to weasel out of a bad decision. He should just front up, admit he made the wrong call and dump the proposal.

“The fire storm of protests around the country have National MPs running for cover and Nathan Guy desperately trying to cover his tracks.

“Nathan Guy must listen to Labour and to recreational fishers.

“He must immediately rule out any proposals that would be unfair to New Zealanders who love fishing and want to feed their families.

“He should stop running away from the media and the public and make a call now. He has to take unfair cuts to Kiwi fishing rights off the table instead of cow-towing to big commercial interests,” said David Cunliffe.
