Go Buy American Farms
Harvard
New Zealand First has criticised
the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) for allowing Harvard
University to buy a big dairy farm in Otago.
This
follows the OIO clearing Dairy Farms Partnership, an
investment company owned by Harvard University, to buy a
1300 hectare farm in Otago's Maniototo district near two
other dairy farms it already owns.
Leader Rt Hon
Winston Peters says valuable land producing New Zealand’s
most valuable commodity is being sold out from under the
feet of New Zealanders.
“This government will go
down in history as being guilty of economic sabotage. How
can we survive if our good land is taken away from
us?”
Mr Peters says the OIO is simply a rubber
stamp for the Government’s policy of returning New Zealand
to the status of an economic colony.
“The law on
New Zealand land ownership and the functions of the OIO are
conspiring to work against our long term economic and social
interest.
“Every day we lose something else to
overseas ownership and one day there will be nothing left
for New Zealanders,” says Mr Peters.
