Fiordland Transport Projects Require Careful Scrutiny
New Zealand First says the proposed tunnel and monorail projects linking Queenstown with Milford Sound appear to fall short of some major objectives.
Conservation spokesperson Andrew Williams says the projects could threaten the pristine world heritage environment in Fiordland.
“If that was the case then it would be an act of environmental vandalism just to make it a bit faster for tourists to get to and from Milford Sound.
“New Zealand prides itself on our ‘100% Pure’ image and these projects may well go against that vision.
“Both schemes could have major environmental effects on the likes of Glenorchy, Lake Wakatipu, and remote valleys in the area.
“Many people come to New Zealand to see our world famous scenic wonders, not to travel on buses for many kilometres under mountain ranges.
“The Government needs to ensure that it gets its priorities right or risk damaging one of the most beautiful parts of the country.
“We need new tunnels and trains in Wellington and Auckland, not in beautiful Fiordland,” says Mr Williams.
