“Frack Off”

Yesterday the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment released a report titled “Evaluating the Environment
Impacts of Fracking in New Zealand”.
Dr Wright highlighted a number of concerns about the practise of fracking including that current regulatory measures are
inadequate.
Maori throughout the country have expressed major concerns about opening up our seas and land to oil companies. Most, if
not all of those concerns, are centred around fracking.
From Te Whanau a Apanui, to Ngai Tahu, to my neck of the woods in Nga Puhi, I have not heard one Maori say they support
fracking.
The threat of contaminating underground water or even worse, causing earthquakes, is too great a risk for Maori and many
Pakeha.
MANA support the Greens call for a moratorium on the practise and urges Dr Wright to tell the government and oil
companies to “frack off!” until they can prove it is safe and the government gets its act together with proper
regulation and monitoring.
