Tribunal Says No Deal

Monday 30th July

“This is the first significant step in shutting down the government’s plan to sell our power companies – and along with most Kiwis, I couldn’t be happier” said MANA Leader Hone Harawira.

This afternoon the Waitangi Tribunal made an interim recommendation that the Crown halt the share float of any of the MOM companies until the Tribunal has reported back on stage one of the Maori Council’s freshwater and geothermal resources claim. The purpose is to preserve the status quo while the case is being determined.

“Congratulations to the NZ Maori Council, the Tai Tokerau District Maori Council, and to those hapū and iwi claimants for pushing for this recommendation to be made”.

“The question now is whether the government will listen to the Tribunal and halt the sale of state assets or whether they simply spit in the face of the Tribunal like the Prime Minister said he would. The Maori Party will no doubt still be prepared to sit at the table even if the PM ignores the Tribunal”.
