Further NZ support for flood-ravaged Fiji

Foreign Minister Murray McCully today announced New Zealand will provide a further $750,000 to the relief and recovery effort following severe flooding in Fiji.

This brings New Zealand’s total contribution to the flood response to $1.25 million.

"The situation in Fiji is improving as the weather clears but there is still an enormous clean up job ahead and many challenges for the people of Fiji," Mr McCully says.

"Latest reports suggest that up 14,000 people continue to take refuge in evacuation centres, with many facing uncertainty and major damage when they return to their communities.

"Up to $500,000 of the funding will be provided to New Zealand non-government organisations working with partners in flood affected areas. The balance will be used to purchase relief supplies or services requested by Fiji.

"Assessments of the damage are still being carried out and New Zealand will continue to monitor the situation closely to see if further assistance is required," Mr McCully says.
