Sir Paul Callaghan – a huge loss
Labour Leader David Shearer has expressed his deep sadness at the death of Sir Paul Callaghan, a man he described as hugely inspirational and a true leader.
“Sir Paul had a brilliant mind. He was not only one of New Zealand’s leading scientists, he was a pioneer. His cutting-edge research in the development of nuclear magnetic resonance methods has had an enormous impact in the areas of medicine, physics and biology.
“He was passionate about the potential of science and technology to diversify New Zealand's economy, and he was a gentleman - in every sense of the word. I consider him a friend and I will miss him greatly.
“Sir Paul cared about people and he cared about the country.
“He was a great man who leaves a legacy of great ideas that New Zealand will take forward into a new future.
“Sir Paul will be truly missed. Our condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends.”
