New appointment to Law Commission

Minister Responsible for the Law Commission Judith Collins announced today that Hon Dr Wayne Mapp has been appointed as a new member of the Law Commission.

“Wayne Mapp is a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. He has many years experience across a wide range of legal issues, in particular, he has a strong interest in commercial and international law.

“I am confident the skills and experience Dr Mapp will bring to the Commission will see him make a valuable contribution across the range of the Commission’s work programme,” Ms Collins said.

Background

Hon Dr Wayne Mapp is a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. From 1979 to 1982 he practised law in the firm of John Collinge, specialising in commercial litigation and general commercial law. From 1983 to 1995 he taught commercial law at the University of Auckland becoming an Associate Professor of Law. In 1996 Dr Mapp entered Parliament and from 2008 to 2011 he was the Minister of Defence and Minister of Science and Innovation. He gained his LLB (Hons) at the University of Auckland, followed by his LLM from the University of Toronto and his PhD in International Law from Cambridge University.

The Law Commission is an independent Crown entity established to undertake the systematic review, reform, and development of the law. The commission investigates and reports to Parliament on how laws can be improved. It also reviews the law and processes in specific areas selected by it, or referred to it, by the Minister Responsible for the Law Commission.
