Maori Party - will work with any party that supports the kaupapa - Pita Sharples

The Maori Party has scoffed at claims that it has already decided to enter into an agreement with the National Party.

"That is not true. The people who say such things are wanting your vote - and that is why they are saying them," said co-leader Dr Pita Sharples.

"We have said that we are prepared to work with any party that supports us on our kaupapa. Our aim is to get the best deal we can for Maori, using whatever leverage we have," he said.

"The fact is that no-one knows who might form a government until after the election. The Maori Party will wait to see how the people have voted, and what our options are, before we make any moves.

"The other thing is that the Maori Party will consult with its membership before making a final decision anyway. We have done that before and we'll be doing it again.

"We want to be in the strongest position possible to get a good deal for our people. That is why we want two ticks - one for the person, and one for the kaupapa," said Dr Sharples.

"Any voter, Maori or Pakeha, can give your party vote to the Maori Party, even if you are on the general roll.

"And we want everyone to vote for MMP. History has shown it means More Maori in Parliament.

"MMP can also mean Maximising Maori Potential, if the people come with us into te Ana o te Raiona to engage with the Kawanatanga," said Dr Sharples.
