Call for report on Urewera Raids to be released - Flavell
Maori Party MP for Waiariki, Te Ururoa Flavell, is calling for two reports on the Tuhoe raids to be released, one by the Independent Police Conduct Authority and the other by the Human Rights Commission. Both these reports, Mr Flavell understands, will outline a severe miscarriage of justice.
“It’s time for the Government to open up the books and let the truth out” said Mr Flavell.
“As they say, sunlight is the best disinfectant – let’s see the whole story come out so we can really understand what went on”. He adds.
“I have read one of the draft reports and I have been waiting for them both to be released so that the public can see the whole picture” said Mr Flavell
“I believe the reports will vindicate the position that the Maori Party has continued to argue, highlighting the unfair treatment of the people living in and around the Ruatoki valley.”
“For some reason the release of these reports has been held up four years after the arrests, so one side of the argument lacks supporting evidence.”
“It is simply not acceptable that the people of Tuhoe have been kept in limbo – by the courts; and now it seems by the Independent Police Conduct Authority and the Human Rights Commission as well,” ends Mr Flavell.
