Auckland City Council should be congratulated on their plan
Labour Auckland Issues spokesperson Phil Twyford says the Auckland City Council commitment to stop the sprawl and building the city rail link, contained in its draft plan released today is a shot across the bows of the National Government.
“I congratulate the Auckland City Council for sticking to their guns in the face of on-going Government hostility to their vision for Auckland,” Phil Twyford said
“Aucklanders know the old fashioned motorway and sprawl model will not deliver a modern 21st century city, but National is clinging to its old ways and is openly hostile to Len Brown’s draft plan.
“Aucklanders want a vibrant city served by modern public transport. That is why they voted for Len Brown.
“Government Ministers have made it clear in recent weeks that they do not support the council plan for the city rail link nor the proposal to carefully manage the city’s outward expansion.
“It’s time National got over its frustration that its candidate didn’t win the Auckland Mayoralty and got behind the plans for building a better Auckland,” Phil Twyford said.
