Catherine Moana Dewes: Anō nei he whare-kōrero
Māori Party MP for Waiariki, Te Ururoa Flavell, was proud to attend the recent conferral of an Honorary Doctorate on Catherine (Cathy) Dewes, following years of contribution to Māori development.
“I have known Cathy personally for over 20 years and have known of her for over 35 years. Her name is synonymous with Kōhanga Reo, the Kura Kaupapa movement, Whare Kura, Te Reo Māori initiatives, Māori broadcasting, and her beloved Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ruamata.
“She has been at the heart of major developments in all of these movements.” Said Mr Flavell
“Cathy’s contribution also includes 35-years commitment to the retention and enhancement of Māori language.
“Over the years, she has brought a passion, a dedication, and a research element to these developments, which have her as an inspiration to those involved in the Māori language.
“An acknowledgement, such as the Honorary Doctorate, of her substantial contribution is well justified and I am sure is fully justified by her people.
