On Sunday, Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman will launch the Green Party’s plan to clean up our rivers and lakes.
“Our sparkling rivers and lakes are a key part of what makes Aotearoa New Zealand such a beautiful place to live, but
they are under threat,” said Dr Norman.
“Over half of our monitored rivers are unsafe for swimming, one-third of our lakes are unhealthy, and two-thirds of our
native freshwater fish are at risk or threatened with extinction.
“This is not a legacy we want to pass on to the next generation.”
Dr Norman said the Green Party plan, if implemented, would make our rivers and lakes clean enough to swim in again. The
plan will also have economic benefits.
“Healthy rivers are essential for a healthy economy.
“Our clean and green brand underpins our tourism and agricultural exports. Cleaning up our rivers and lakes is a way to
protect and enhance our 100% Pure brand, and build clean green economy that works for everyone.”
Dr Norman will release details of the plan at Waitangi Park in Wellington at 11:00am on Sunday 21 August. He will be
joined by NZ rowing champion Rob Hamill, renowned water scientist Dr Mike Joy, Te Atiawa representative Morrie Love, and
kiwi songtress Jess Chambers.
