Prue Hyman contributes to Green Party compassionate economy project
The Green Party continues its online project exploring New Zealand women’s visions of a “compassionate economy” with a
contribution from noted feminist economist Prue Hyman this weekend.
The Green Party has invited several New Zealand women, prominent in their fields and communities, to share their visions
of a compassionate economy in a series of short opinion pieces to be published online. The third in the series is a
contribution from noted feminist economist Prue Hyman on valuing paid and unpaid work in a compassionate economy.
“Prue’s piece makes the case for changing the way we think about paid and unpaid work and focusing instead on valuing
the useful activity, both paid and unpaid, on which we all depend” Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei said.
“At a time when the Government’s approach to paid employment is increasingly to demonise and punish beneficiaries,
Prue’s contribution is both timely and thought-provoking.
“Prue’s vision of a worldwide compassionate economy in which we can all live well now and in the future is compelling.
“The challenge now is to work towards making it a reality,” Mrs Turei said.
