Urgent need for more pest control Commissioner tells Select Committee
New Zealand urgently needs to increase pest control on conservation land Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wright told the Commerce Committee this afternoon.
Dr Wright was speaking to her report, Evaluating the use of 1080: Predators, poisons and silent forests, which was released in June.
“If we are to arrest the population decline of many of our native species we need to increase pest control across the conservation estate, including the use of more 1080.
“While such an increase may be challenging it must happen if we want our children to be able to experience our unique plants and birds in the same way we can.
“My report was met with a strong consensus across most political parties when it was released in June but it is vital that this consensus translates into action.”
It is expected an update report on 1080 will be released next year.
