Pipfruit industry facing big challenges
A Government report that shows the many of the country’s orchardists and winegrowers are suffering financial hardship highlights the serious challenges the industry is facing, Labour’s Agriculture spokesman Damien O’Connor says.
He said fluctuating and unhelpful market situations require disciplined management, and unless changes were implemented the industry was unlikely to recover in the short term.
“Apple growers may find new markets opening in Australia are not the panacea they expect, vineyard owners are having to deal with a worldwide grape glut, and the kiwifruit industry desperately needs help to solve the blight that is Psa.
“The horticultural industry is operating in a massively competitive environment.
It may be able to ride out one or two bad years, but if it is to have a long-term, viable future, the Government must show some leadership to bring consensus and provide workable solutions,” Damien O’Connor said.
