Former Mayor Andrew Williams Selected for NZ First
New Zealand First has selected former North Shore City Mayor Andrew Williams as its candidate to contest the North Shore
electorate in the 2011 General Election.
Mr Williams was selected for his leadership qualities, his expertise in local authority issues and also for his long
involvement in issues of international trade.
Rt Hon Winston Peters says Andrew Williams was one of the few local body politicians to hold the government to account
over the creation of the Auckland Super City.
“He became a nuisance to the government when he reminded it of its obligation to consult the people about the findings
of the Royal Commission on the future of their cities.
“Instead it is now history how Rodney Hide and the government rushed through the Super City legislation with indecent
haste, ignoring much of the commission’s findings.”
Mr Williams says he was attracted to New Zealand First because of its principles of promoting the welfare of all
citizens, particularly policies to help senior citizens.
“For a number of years I pushed for concession transport for the elderly but the only party to actually do something was
New Zealand First.
“It’s time to do something positive to help lift our country out of the doldrums and I am convinced New Zealand First is
the party that can do it,” says Mr Williams.
