ECE cuts prove there’s no plan for future

Funding cuts to early childhood education coming into effect tomorrow provide further proof that the National Government has no plan for the future, says Labour’s Education spokesperson Sue Moroney

From tomorrow provisionally-registered teachers will lose funding to support their practice at services with 80 per cent qualified staff, Sue Moroney said.

“The funding cut amounts to $4000 per teacher. These cuts are short-sighted and they are not in the best interests of children or the future of New Zealand.

“Education services used this funding to ensure mentoring and professional development was provided so these teachers could achieve their full registration,” Sue Moroney said.

"The cuts are a backward step in terms of improving quality. All the research tells us that quality early childhood education is one of the best investments any government can make, returning at least $11 for every dollar invested.

“These on-going funding cuts to early childhood education show how low our children are on the priority list for the National Government,” Sue Moroney said.
