Disabled people can access earthquake assistance
The Minister for Disability Issues, Tariana Turia, would like to encourage disabled people, or carers of disabled
people, who need assistance due to the Christchurch earthquake to contact the government helpline.
“The government helpline, 0800 779 997, is open to take your phone calls for any help you may need. If you are disabled, or a carer of a disabled person, and
you require help please contact the number. The people who answer your call will be able to provide you with the help or
further contacts for services or products you need. Don’t leave it until you run out of medication or products,” said
Minister Turia.
“People with disabilities may feel reluctant to ask for assistance. In Christchurch there are organisations and service
providers in place ready to support disabled people with their specific needs. I encourage you not to put off your phone
call,” said Minister Turia.
“I would like to thank all the non-government organisations that are keeping disabled people informed, and are working
together so constructively with government agencies to offer support and assistance to disabled people in Christchurch.
“It is so pleasing to see New Zealand Sign Language Interpreters used for important earthquake announcements so Deaf
people are informed,” said Minister Turia.
"One of the truly heart-warming effects to come out of this time, has been to see the levels of genuine support and
compassion throughout our community. I would hope that the needs of disabled persons and their carers are being given
particular priority ".
