Australian PM delivers the news Kiwi apple growers have been waiting for
Labour is celebrating the announcement by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard that it will adhere to a World Trade Organisation ruling and allow New Zealand apples to be sold in Australia, Agriculture spokesman Damien O'Connor says.
"The announcement today that Australia won't continue blocking entry of New Zealand apples into Australia is welcome news for the horticultural and export industries at a time when they dearly need it," Damien O'Connor said.
"Kiwi apple growers will be excited by today's confirmation that their long wait to export apples to Australia is nearly over.
"This marks the end of a long battle for New Zealand growers and trade officials which began in 2007 when then Trade Minister Phil Goff took the issue to the WTO.
"The Australian market, potentially worth $30 million presents a great opportunity for New Zealand growers after several difficult years. "The challenge now for the industry will be to show discipline, uphold quality and coordinate supply to maximise returns from what will be a very competitive market," Damien O'Connor said "Australian consumers can also look forward to benefitting from lower prices and better quality apples perhaps as early as October this year."
