District Court Judge appointed

Peter Alan Hall Hobbs, Barrister and Solicitor of Wellington, has been appointed a District Court Judge, Attorney-General Christopher Finlayson announced today.

Mr Hobbs was admitted to the Bar in 1994 and worked as a Staff Solicitor with the Wellington firm, Luke Cunningham and Clere Solicitors, specialising in property and commercial law from 1993-1994. He later held the position of Associate, gaining experience as a criminal prosecutor in the Litigation Department – a position he held for five years. Mr Hobbs worked in Gibson Sheat’s Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department from 1999-2001 before moving to Telecom New Zealand as a commercial manager for the next two years. In 2003, he returned to Gibson Sheat where he has been a partner since 2005 working predominately in the Commercial/Sports/Tribunal areas. He is a Judicial Officer for the NZRU, SANZAR and the IRB.

His personal interests include involvement with the Citizens Advice Bureau. He is also on the Board of Trustees for the Ronald McDonald House Wellington Trust as the Child Cancer Foundation representative for the central region.

Mr Hobbs will be sworn in at Wellington on 18 February 2011 and will initially sit in Manukau followed by Wellington.
