New Zealand Arts Capital deserves Creative NZ support

The news that a number of Wellington based arts organisations have been funded under the new Arts Leadership Programme is welcome, but others, who have a good track record of quality performance, are still uncertain as to their future, Grant Robertson MP for Wellington Central said.

“It is great news that Bats Theatre, Capital E, the International Arts Festival and the Wellington Children’s Festival have had on-going funding confirmed. But there is still some uncertainty for Downstage and Circa Theatres and the Vector Wellington Orchestra. They need certainty as soon as possible if they are to continue the leading role they place in arts in Wellington." Grant Robertson said.

" Downstage, Circa and the orchestra are among groups who have been asked to provide more information to Creative New Zealand before a final decision is made on getting multiyear funding. They are all highly successful and important institutions that provide leadership within the arts in Wellington and the lower North Island.

“For the theatre sector it is great that Bats theatre is being funded as a launch pad for new productions. It’s important also for there to be places that those productions can go to so that a wider audience can see them.

“Wellington is deservedly seen as the arts capital of New Zealand, and the on-going health of these three organisations is a key part of that. While it is good that they are still in the mix for funding, they do need certainty as to their future as soon as possible. I would urge Creative New Zealand to communicate clearly with the organisations as to the information that is needed and make their decisions in a timely manner."

“I also hope Arts Minister Chris Finlayson as a Wellington based MP is keeping a close on eye on proceedings"
