New Zealand MP to talk on participation of minorities and indigenous peoples

New Zealand member of Parliament, Rahui Katene, will present a paper on effective political participation of minorities and indigenous peoples at an international conference of parliamentarians in Chiapas, Mexico from 31 October to 3 November 2010.

The International Parliamentary Conference on Minorities and Indigenous Peoples is part of an Inter-Parliamentary Union and United Nations Development Programme project, ‘Promoting Inclusive parliaments: The representation of minorities and indigenous peoples in parliament’.

“I am delighted to be able to accept this invitation to provide New Zealand’s perspective on why effective political participation is important and how this can be brought about,” Ms Katene said.

The conference will be attended by 250 parliamentarians who will be focused on promoting effective participation of minorities and indigenous peoples in decision-making.
